Josef Dvořák started his career in amateur theater in Kadaň, from where he was able to join the Ústí nad Labem-based Kladivadlo theater thanks to the sensitive theater director Pavel Fiala, where he achieved his first successes. In 1972, he joined the Prague theater group Semafor, where he was one of the leading members from 1972 to 1990.

He played over 800 characters on screen, making his film debut in Jít návětrnou strání and going on to appear in Jáchyme, hoď ho do stroje, Parta hic, Hop a je tu lidoop, Buldoci a třešně and others. He also gained recognition among television viewers with his roles in television series such as Nemocnice na kraji města, Rozpaky kuchaře Svatopluka, Návštěvníci, Arabela, Byli jednou dva písaři, Cirkus Humberto.

He was also beloved by children, particularly through the series of Malé televizní kabarety where he performed with Jitka Molavcová, Pavel Zedníček, and Štěpánka Haničincová. He appeared in dozens of television fairy tales (Traja chrobáci, O Floriánkovi, Taneček přes dvě pekla, Hastrmanská povídačka), often playing the role of a waterman.

He lent his voice to many animated children's shows. He is particularly remembered for his work as the voice of Maxipes Fík, for which he received ten platinum records, as well as Bob a Bobek - králíci z klobouku, Včelí medvídci...
