Peter Weller is an American actor and director, born in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Due to his father’s military career, he spent much of his childhood living abroad. While attending North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas), he played trumpet in a campus band. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre in 1970 and continued his training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, graduating in 1972 and beginning his professional acting career.
Alongside his work in film and television, Weller has built an impressive academic career. In 2004, he completed a Master of Arts in Roman and Renaissance Art at Syracuse University, where he also occasionally taught courses in ancient history. In 2007, he began a PhD in Italian Renaissance Art History at UCLA. He defended his dissertation in May 2013 and was awarded his doctorate in 2014.
Weller has appeared in more than 50 films and television series. He is best known for his leading roles in The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984), RoboCop (1987), and RoboCop 2 (1990). In 2013, he portrayed Starfleet Admiral Alexander Marcus in Star Trek Into Darkness.
On television, he has delivered a range of memorable performances, including Terran supremacist John Frederick Paxton in Star Trek: Enterprise, terrorist collaborator Christopher Henderson in 24, corrupt police officer Stan Liddy in Dexter, and Charles “Charlie” Barosky in Sons of Anarchy—a ruthless former cop and leader of a group of corrupt Stockton police officers.
Weller has also made a notable impact as a voice actor. He voiced Batman in the two-part animated adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns (2012–2013) and later reprised his iconic role as RoboCop in Mortal Kombat 11 (2019) and RoboCop: Rogue City (2023).
